Convenient keyboard shortcuts around the desktop:

Alt + Tab: Cycle through open applications (the AIM user's favorite)
Alt + F4: Close the current application
Windows (the button that looks like the Microsoft Windows logo) + D: Minimize all open windows, thus returning you to the desktop
